Earlier people used to see private tuition as a bane for the Indian Education system. It was considered as an entity that creates the financial burden on parents. However, the survey conducted by accountability initiative, wing of Centre for Policy Research based in New Delhi says: Private tuitions have positive impacts on children, especially in the elementary level. The effect is equivalent to the one additional year of schooling or similar to private school education for a student attending government school.
The survey was conducted under the title “Impact of Private Tutoring on Learning Levels” in the Indian state Rajasthan.
Report prepared after the extensive research shows the relation between private tutoring and learning Level. The learning level includes reading, comprehension and arithmetic taught in the government schools in Rajasthan.
Rajasthan being one of the poorest states of India, pupils in government schools here observe poor learning quality. The 52.8% of Class IIIrd students cannot read the text of standard Ist. The 37.4% of class IIIrd students can do simple subtraction of class Ist. Approx. 8.4% of student up to VIIIth standard take tuition classes to pass the exam. This statistic is taken from Annual Status Education Report (ASER) of NGO Pratham.
When asked with the parent why do they send their wards for tuition, parents gave answers like:
- They are unable to guide their wards, especially who are in higher grades.
- Children are not able to catch up with the pace of syllabus.
According to the report, students who are attending tuition classes spend more time studying. Private tutors put more effort in solving the problems that students face. These private tutors make some effort to identify the problematic areas of the students.
